Our List of Top 10 Best Musicals Ever Made

When it comes to musicals, everyone seems to have an opinion. There are some people who over-praise certain musicals, while there are few people who seem to blindly hate whatever that comes out. So what makes a musical really great? Well, a musical should have a good theme, a story telling mode, great music and some really good speech delivery. Not to mention, the performers should bring the characters into life. That being said, we have created a list of top 10 best musicals ever made.

  1. Phantom of the opera– Without a shadow of doubt, the best musical ever made. The plot line alone is what makes it so good. It is based on French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, its central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius. The music and its composition is amazing and till this day it remains the number one musical in a lot of people’s list
  2. Les Miserables- Another musical which was based on a French novel Les Miserables. The plot for this is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child.
  3. Lion King– Standing in on our number 3 is the adaptation of Disney’s famous Lion King. Everyone is aware of the plot for this musical. The music and songs added to the story makes it a great musical.
  4. Oh! Calcutta– A musical that focusses on sex related issues, Oh! Calcutta is a must watch for the musical lovers. The story and the theatrics in it make for a great show.
  5. Beauty and the Beast- Another musical based on Disney’s story. The music is done by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.
  6. Jersey Boys– This is one of the “newer” musicals that was made on 2006. Jersey Boys have featured around 3612 performances. That speaks volume about the quality of the musical.
  7. My Fair Lady– Going back to a show that opened on 1956 and closed on 1962, My Fair Lady is 7th on our list. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she could pass off as a lady. There is a wonderful story telling in this musical that’s bound to catch your heart.
  8. Chicago– A musical that has been featured over 7000 times, Chicago tells you the story of the crime ridden city back in the Probation Era. While not a personal favorite, it has been a huge it among a lot of people.
  9. Mamma Mia– One of the best, if not the best, musicals of the 21st century is Mamma Mia. It has been featured over 5000 times and is still going strong. The songs are based on the famous band ABBA.
  10. Miss Saigon– Opened in the 1991 and closed in 2011, this musical has been featured over a little 4000 times within a short period of time. The musical tells us the tragic tale of an Asian woman who has been left by her American lover. It is indeed a great musical to watch.
